Before I get really get into the question, I have to say that I personally don't! Instead I love different things about different times gone by. I love the glamour of the 1930s, the fashion of the 1940s, the frivolity of the fifties, the emergence of strong independent women in the sixties, the styles and music of the seventies and so on. So based on all of the above, you can gather that my style, look, interests, home decor etc. are very eclectic and that's just how I like it!
Does anyone have a fondness for a particular age or decade and why?
Some say old fashioned, I say traditional. Classic maybe even! I ask because Jennie McAlpine (Fizz in Coronation Street) has given birth to her third child and called her new daughter Doris. Her two older children are called Albert and Hilda. This has led to quite a few comments from people saying that the names she has chosen are seriously outdated. I remember when her son was born, she said that she chose Albert because she wanted a solid Northern name for him. Being a northerner myself, I completely understand. My parents chose a fairly modern name for me which was once quite popular in the eighties and nineties but started to die out I'd say mid 2000s. I think I have a nice name and I like that it's becoming less common. When I was at school there were loads of girls with my name which was a bit annoying because you wouldn't know who teacher was talking to! When I had my two however, I chose more traditional names which I agree aren't everyone's cup of tea but I liked them and thought they suited my kids perfectly.
So what does everyone think of the more old fashioned names like Arthur or Mabel and would you use them for your kids?
And it's happening again!
Roald Dahl had been writing since the 1940s and it's now that everyone decides that his books need to be rewritten in order to avoid causing offence. I understand that times change and what was once acceptable may no longer be the case. But the changes that I've come across seem absolutely pointless. So we can't say 'ugly' but we can say 'beastly.' To be honest, I think beastly sounds worse!
Me and my husband are eighties children so we of course grew up not only reading Roald Dahl books but also had them read to us at school by the teacher during storytime. Our kids have also read them. I think for the most part it's a big fuss over nothing.
I understand that both versions will be available in bookshops, Roald's original version as well as the rewrite. But I just feel that there are more important things going on in the world rather than a few words in a children's book.
What does everyone else say about this?
